Description from the seller
This is a Religious Plasterfigurine of Saint Anthony the Abbot, recognizable by the brown habit with a cord and a pig at his feet. A Saint in a monk’s attire. Hand-painted beige and brown-gray and green.
Biography
Anthony was born the son of wealthy parents. When Anthony was twenty, his parents died. He gave all his possessions to the poor and withdrew in solitude to the desert. Later other Christians joined him and formed one of the first communities of monks in his monastery of Saint Anthony in the Eastern Desert of Egypt.
He was the first monk to win many followers and is therefore known as the father of monastic life. Anthony is credited with the earliest formulation of the metaphor of the Book of Nature. This was the view of nature as a book that, in addition to the Bible, can be read as a source of knowledge of God. A visitor would have asked Anthony how he managed in his existence as a hermit without books. Anthony’s answer was: My book is the whole of nature, and I can read that book whenever I want.
He died at the age of 105 and was buried, according to his own instructions, in a secret grave to prevent his tomb from becoming a place of veneration. Soon after his death he was canonized. Athanasius of Alexandria wrote the best-known biography of Anthony.
Condition: In Very Good Used Condition
Please Pay Special Attention to the Photos — It is best to look closely at the photos; you can clearly see everything there. This gives a better impression of the condition than words. “The statue is sold as you can see in the photos.”
