This antique French Rouen earthenware soup tureen, dating from 1750–1800, has polychrome floral decoration, a matching lid and handles, and measures 30 × 20 × 22 cm.
Description from the seller
Large antique earthenware terrine.
I suspect this fine, hand-painted faience terrine dates from the 18th century, possibly of French origin.
This presumed dating is based on the characteristic, somewhat primitive and spontaneous manner of painting, the irregularities in the tin glaze, and the visible age-related features. The glaze shows a fine, naturally looking craquelure, with local discolorations indicating long-term use and aging.
Also the slightly irregular form, the graceful handles, the flower-shaped knop on the lid, and the stylized polychrome floral decoration fit with traditional faience production from the 18th century.
The terrine has an unglazed stand ring with a red-brown slip. The lid and the terrine clearly form a matching unit, with matching painting and glaze.
Although an exact attribution to a production place is not yet possible, the piece shows similarities with 18th-century French faience, among others from Rouen and Sinceny and La Rochelle.
Dimensions: about 29.5 cm wide and 22.5 cm high, including the lid.
The terrine is in very good condition for its age with minimal signs of use.
I suspect that there has been a restoration to the tulip on the lid, but I am not certain.
The tulip, in turn, reminds me of Delftware.
