Two Ming dynasty sedan chair bearers – (#9881)
Partly glazed miniature funerary figures recognizable as sedan chair bearers. They are recognizable as a bearers because the poles of the sedan chair could be inserted under their raised arm. Often sedan chairs, carried by four bearers form part of a group of musicians and dignitaries which accompanied the deceased to the afterlife. The last photo shows a sedan chair and bearers in the Lowlands-collection. The glaze is still in fine condition and shows iridescence but the cold-painted face and hat have lost most of its color. The bearers date from the Ming dynasty (1368 – 1644). Collected in 1992 in Hong Kong. Height 21 cm. Width 5.5 cm. Depth 5.2 cm.
