Description from the seller

Large Bronze Torque / Prestige Neck Ring – West Africa, Possibly Gan – Copper Alloy – Ø 20 cm

Origin: West Africa, possibly Burkina Faso
People: Possibly Gan (attribution uncertain)
Type: Large torque / prestige ornament
Material(s): Copper alloy (bronze)
Dimensions: Approximately 20 cm in external diameter
Period: Early 20th century or possibly earlier (presumed)
Provenance: Former French private collection

An impressive and unusually large West African bronze torque, remarkable for its broad circular form, surviving engraved decoration and beautiful green-blue patina.

This substantial open-ended ring measures approximately 20 cm in diameter and has a strong sculptural presence.

Its construction is particularly appealing. The broad metal band has a pronounced central ridge, dividing the exterior into two gently sloping surfaces. The two flattened terminals approach one another without touching, completing an almost perfect circle.

Despite extensive surface oxidation, traces of finely executed decoration remain visible, particularly along the edges and upper surfaces. These include incised lines and curved, almost spiral-like motifs.

The form and surviving decoration invite comparison with traditional copper-alloy torques attributed to several West African populations, including the Gan of Burkina Faso and the Baule of Côte d'Ivoire. A precise cultural attribution cannot, however, be established with certainty.

Large copper-alloy rings of this general type could serve as prestige ornaments and expressions of wealth, combining the intrinsic value of the metal with the skill of the founder and the symbolic importance of the object.

The most striking feature of this example is undoubtedly its extraordinary surface.

The metal is covered with a thick, varied patina combining pale turquoise, blue-green, earthy beige and darker areas of oxidation. This mineral-like surface gives the object an almost archaeological appearance.

Beneath this extensive oxidation, the original geometric structure and remnants of the engraved decoration remain clearly recognizable.

The contrast between the simplicity of the circular silhouette and the complex textures of the surface gives the piece considerable visual strength.

An evocative example of traditional West African metalwork, appealing both as an ethnographic object and as an abstract sculptural form.

Condition

Good structural condition overall, with extensive old surface oxidation and wear.

Thick green-blue and earthy patina, with deposits, surface irregularities and areas of corrosion.

The original engraved decoration is considerably worn but remains visible in places.

Wear and abrasions to the edges and terminals.

The precise age and origin of the patina have not been scientifically established.

Please refer carefully to the photographs, which form an essential part of the condition description.

Included

The bronze torque only.

Display stand not included.
