The Technics RS-B605 is a stereo cassette deck produced by Technics between 1988 and 1989. The model is primarily known for its Class AA amplifier circuitry and its comprehensive integration of noise reduction systems, including the less common dbx Type II.
Key Features & Specifications
• Head System: The deck utilizes a 2-head system (1 x combined hard permalloy record/playback head and 1 x double-gap ferrite erase head).
• Motors: Equipped with 2 motors (including an electronically controlled DC motor for the drive mechanism).
• Noise Reduction: Highly versatile, featuring Dolby B, Dolby C, and dbx Type II. It also includes Dolby HX Pro headroom extension to minimize high-frequency distortion during recording.
• Tape Type Support: Automatic selection for Type I (Normal), Type II (CrO2), and Type IV (Metal) tapes.
• Performance:
• Frequency Response: 20 Hz to 19,000 Hz when using Metal tapes.
• Signal-to-Noise Ratio: Up to 92 dB with the dbx system engaged (compared to 56 dB without noise reduction).
• Wow & Flutter: 0.06% WRMS.
• Design: A front-loading unit finished in the 'charcoal brown' (Technics black) color typical of the era, featuring a 4-digit digital counter and multi-colored FL (fluorescent) peak level meters. Historical Context
This model belonged to the mid-range segment and was one of the final generations of cassette decks in which Panasonic/Technics integrated the high-end dbx system. Although dbx provides an impressive dynamic range—approaching CD quality—it requires highly precise calibration of both the circuitry and the VU meters. Within the audio community, the RS-B605 is valued for its sleek 1980s aesthetic and its dbx functionality.
A few scratches on top only.
