Description from the seller
An exceptional and finely painted antique Greek Orthodox icon depicting the Annunciation of the Mother of God (Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου).
The Archangel Gabriel gently approaches the Virgin Mary to deliver the divine message, holding a lily symbolizing purity. Mary stands with her hands crossed in a gesture of pious devotion and humble acceptance.
Clearly lettered in traditional Greek script at the top: "Ο Ευαγγελισμός" (The Annunciation) and "της Θεοτόκου" (of the Mother of God).
The icon exhibits exquisite execution with soft facial tones, intricate drapery work in vivid red and green hues, and a beautifully preserved golden halo background characteristic of the workshop's finest output.
This beautiful icon originates from Mount Athos, Greece, and is a verified work from the highly celebrated and important "Iconographic Studio of Ioasafaioi" (εἰκονογραφικόν ἐργαστήριον Ἰωασαφαίων). The Ioasafaioi fathers (see last pictures) were renowned during the late 19th and early 20th centuries for introducing a sophisticated, academic realism to Athonite iconography, making their icons highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
