Description
Original, signed comic page by Belgian artist Jan Bosschaert, from his debut album Icarus, published in 1982 by Albino.
Historical significance of Icarus
Icarus holds a special place in the body of work of Jan Bosschaert. It was his first published graphic novel and marked the official start of his career as a comics author.
The album is a fully wordless visual story in which Bosschaert tells his narrative solely through drawings and visual composition.
In 1983, Bosschaert received an honorable mention from the jury of the Bronzen Adhemar for Icarus, a major recognition within the Flemish comics scene. In 1991 he received the Bronzen Adhemar for his entire oeuvre.
The album dates from before his better-known works such as Pest in ‘t Paleis, Omni, Sam and Jaguar, making it an important document from the early period of his artistic development.
The original drawing
The page consists of six panels and shows a woman waking up, getting dressed, and then from her bathroom noticing a figure falling outside the window.
The drawings illustrate Bosschaert’s refined line work, attention to human expression, and the cinematic storytelling technique that would characterize his later work.
Special feature – Original redraw by the artist
The bottom-right panel was completely redrawn by Jan Bosschaert and then glued over the original version.
This original correction is part of the creative production process. The revised panel shows a view between the curtains, with a small falling figure in the background.
The glued-in drawing is clearly recognizable by the edges of the paper and the visible signs of work. It provides a special insight into how Bosschaert refined his compositions while drawing.
Condition
The page is in good condition, with normal signs of aging and handling.
On the glued-in panel there are light discolorations, glue traces, and the edges of the correction visible. Elsewhere on the sheet there are a few small corrections and signs of use.
These elements are part of the original artistic production process and have not been restored.
The page is clearly signed lower left by Jan Bosschaert.
An attractive original comic page from Icarus (1982), the historical debut album of Jan Bosschaert, with six panels, a clear signature, and a special, artist-made revision.
The lot offered concerns solely the original drawing as depicted in the photos.
