The PENTAX 17 was developed as part of the PENTAX Film Camera Project—an initiative first announced in December 2022, through which RICOH IMAGING revealed its plans to develop and bring to market a new PENTAX-branded film camera.

The popularity of film cameras has grown rapidly in recent years—especially among young photographers encountering this type of camera for the first time—due to a distinct, somewhat nostalgic atmosphere that differs significantly from that of digital cameras.

Contrasting with this recent trend, the opportunity to pass on the expertise and technology of seasoned, expert engineers to their younger colleagues—specifically regarding the development of film cameras—is diminishing every year, as digital cameras now account for the vast majority of photography.

The PENTAX 17 was developed by leveraging the extensive body of expertise and technology that RICOH IMAGING/PENTAX has accumulated over the years, with expert engineers and their younger counterparts working in close collaboration. The camera was designed to allow photographers to express their originality and creativity, leaving some room for manual operation, rather than making it a fully automatic camera.

It allows photographers to fully enjoy the world of film cameras - the origin of photography. It is an ideal model not only for film camera enthusiasts who have enjoyed photography for years, but also for new photographers who are excited and want to try film photography for the first time.

In addition to the characteristic image quality that can only be achieved by a film camera, this new model provides users with the fun and excitement of manual camera operation that is unique to film photography, such as manual film winding using the film advance lever and manual focus range adjustment with the zone focus system.

Main Features of the PENTAX 17
1. Half-size Format
The PENTAX 17 features the half-size format, in which two 17mm x 24mm photographs are captured on a single 35mm frame (36mm x 24mm). It also uses a horizontal film advance mechanism. When held in the standard orientation, it captures images in a vertical format—identical to the familiar images captured by the smartphones commonly used for photography today.
