Decorative circular ceramic wall plate from Vallauris, 25 cm diameter, by Monique Brunner, in an Art Deco style from 1940s–1950s, signed and in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Large Vallauris ceramic plate / wall plaque – "Flight of birds" – Signed Monique Brunner – Ø 25 cm – Circa 1960s/1970s
Description of the lot
Superb and large circular decorative plate in Vallauris glazed ceramic, created by the renowned ceramicist Monique Brunner (born Pansier) L'Atelier 55.
The work features a poetic design with exquisite graphic finesse depicting four stylized birds (swallows) taking flight. The basin's background displays a magnificent midnight-blue glaze with nuanced, changing reflections, over which fine incised wavy lines in gold/ochre intertwine, simulating the wind. The birds, hand-painted with precision, create a striking contrast with their glossy off-white glaze, highlighted with black and yellow accents.
Monique Brunner, trained at the prestigious Madoura workshop (where she worked alongside Pablo Picasso and Suzanne Ramié) and then at Cérenne, founded with her husband Kurt Brunner the famous Poterie du Verseau in Vallauris. Her post-war (Mid-Century) production is today highly sought after by collectors of 20th-century French ceramics.
