The Kagle-Affenmaske from the Kran (Guéré) people, Liberia, from a private collection, dating to the mid-20th century.
Description from the seller
Description:
For sale is an impressive and expressive African tribal mask of the Kran (also known as Guéré or Wé), native to the forested border region between Liberia and Ivory Coast.
Very rare mask from the private collection of Lothar H.
This is a Kagle mask with strongly pronounced zoomorphic features, traditionally embodying the traits of a monkey (ape or baboon spirit). Masks of this type possess a dramatic, aggressively powerful character and were used in ceremonial dances as well as initiation rites.
Special features:
Design: Extremely cubist form with deeply set, slit eyes, a distinctive red forehead area, and a prominently protruding, tubular open maw.
Material: Carved from a single block of hardwood. Decorated with traditional pigments (white kaolin in the eye area, reddish earthy color on the forehead).
Additions: The inside of the mouth and parts of the mask are adorned with an original net-like textile fabric, which gives the object additional depth and authenticity.
Condition: Good, aged condition with a beautifully authentically patinated surface. Age-related signs of use and slight drying cracks in the wood, which underscore the rough character of this piece perfectly (see photos).
Note: The sale is without the pictured metal stand. This served only for presentation purposes.
Details & measurements:
Origin: West Africa (Liberia / Côte d'Ivoire)
Ethnicity: Kran / Guéré (Wé)
Material: Wood, pigments, textile mesh
Length: 38 cm
Width: 15 cm
