Description from the seller
Rare and Long Handmade Bobbin Lace – Late 19th Century (Late 1800s) – 6.80 m x 14 cm
Magnificent and elegant decorative border in authentic bobbin lace (pizzo a fuselli), entirely handmade by skilled artisans in the second half of the 19th century (Late 1800s).
The piece stands out for an impressive height of 14 cm and for a refined, stylized geometric and floral motif. The weave is enriched with grid areas and cloth stitch points (semi-filled) that give extraordinary depth and stability to the design. The lower edge is beautifully finished with a scalloped profile and festooned edging, while the right-hand end still preserves the original finely spun fringes from the closure of the piece.
The exceptional and extremely rare feature of this lot is its extraordinary continuous length of 6 meters and 80 centimeters, preserved in a single piece without cuts or later joints. Such a generous and important length testifies to its original use of great prestige, such as the border for a wealthy wedding trousseau of the era, a monumental tablecloth for ceremonies, or an important altar cloth.
The thread used is an excellent late 19th-century spun cotton, characterized by superb regularity and a soft, opaque feel to the touch, which allowed the stitches to be preserved marvelously for over a century.
Condition:
The lace is in splendid and impeccable condition, comparable to new. The stitch structure is perfectly solid and the integrity of the continuous length is fully preserved. The piece is entirely free of halos, damp stains, tears or pulled threads. Such pristine and clean conservation for a late Victorian textile is extremely rare and significantly enhances its collector value.
A museum piece for collectors of antique fabrics, lovers of textile modernism, or for exclusive haute couture projects and philological restoration.
