It was forged more than 4.6 billion years ago in stellar explosions and collisions, before the Sun and the Earth existed. It traveled through space as stardust and became trapped in the bedrock of Lapland, nearly 2 billion years old. Later it spent millennia beneath Arctic ice, until the thaw carried it to the rivers. Gold is not manufactured or printed: it is found. And there will be no more.

In 1868, an expedition found it in the Ivalo River and sparked Finland's first gold rush. In 1945, with the war just ended, men returning from the front went up to Lemmenjoki to try their luck with gold. Even today, every summer, dozens of prospectors wash it under the midnight sun; the rest of the year, snow and polar night cover it all. Lapland produces very little gold, and no two nuggets are the same: this one is unique.

Why do you need gold? Those men were coming out of a war and went to look for gold. It is no coincidence: in every war, many of those who had to flee with the clothes on their backs took gold, because it fits in a pocket and is worth at any border.
