It was forged more than 4.6 billion years ago in explosions and collisions of stars, before the Sun and the Earth existed. It traveled through space as stardust and became trapped in the mother rock of Lapland, almost 2 billion years old. Then it spent millennia under Arctic ice, until the thaw carried it to the rivers. Gold isn't manufactured or printed: it is found. And there won't be more.

In 1868, an expedition found it in the Ivalo River and unleashed the first gold fever of Finland. In 1945, with the war just ended, men returning from the front climbed Lemmenjoki to try their luck with gold. Even today, every summer, dozens of prospectors wash it under the Midnight Sun; the rest of the year, snow and polar night cover everything. Lapland produces very little gold, and no two nuggets are alike: this one is unique.

Why do you need gold? Those men were coming out of a war and went to look for gold. It’s not by chance: in every war, many of those who had to flee with the clothes on their backs carried gold, because it fits in a pocket and is valuable across any border.
