Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox brass travel icon / triptych of Archangel Michael with blue enamel – 19th century
Russian Orthodox triptych in brass with a central depiction of Archangel Michael, rendered in relief and decorated with blue enamel. Its foldable character makes this a typical travel icon for personal devotion.
Description
On the central panel, Archangel Michael is depicted frontal and winged. He wears richly decorated robes and holds his traditional attributes in his hands. Around the figure is a geometric pattern, the sunken portions of which are filled with blue enamel.
The two hinged side wings contain several smaller Biblical and religious scenes in separate registers. Here too the background is provided with blue enamel. Above the central panel there is a cornice bearing an additional religious relief, while the top edges of both side wings also show figurative scenes.
The triptych can be folded completely shut and was thus suitable to be carried as a personal travel icon. The combination of detailed cast work, multiple depictions, and the blue enamel is characteristic of Russian brass icons from the 19th century.
