Description from the seller
French antique porcelain siphon, designed by the firm Appareil Lhote in the late 19th century (roughly between 1870 and 1890) in Paris, originally used for home preparation of Seltzer water (carbonated water).
How did it work?
Despite its appearance resembling a jug or coffee pot, its inner structure features two separate chambers that were filled through the two upper openings:
• On one side a mixture of water with an acidic component (such as tartaric or citric acid) was introduced.
• On the other side water mixed with sodium bicarbonate was poured.
When hermetically sealed with its two stoppers and the liquid was served, the two solutions mixed and reacted just as they left through the two outlets of the front spout, instantly generating the gas and the characteristic effervescence of Seltzer water.
Material: High-density glazed white porcelain.
Rarity: It is a piece highly sought after by collectors of technical antiques and vintage barware, today mainly serving as a distinctive decorative object.
