Description from the seller
Ancient portable travel altar triptych, foldable, from the second half of the 19th century (circa 1870–1890), Balkan-school manufacture with post-Byzantine influence.
Structure in an edicule carved from solid wood with a vaulted arched summit, interior profiles finely carved with a dentilled motif and original mecca gilding. Exterior finished with dark period pigment.
Depicted subjects:
- Central compartment: Saint Michael the Archangel in military attire as a celestial leader, winged, standing on mountainous clouds with spear and gilded halo. Traces of ancient devotional/dedication inscription in the lower band.
- Left panel: Saint George on horseback piercing the dragon with a spear.
- Right panel: Saint Barbara with the martyr’s palm, the Eucharistic ciborium, and the architectural attribute of the tower in the background.
- Inscriptions: Original Slavic-ecclesiastical titles in vermilion red traced in Slavic-ecclesiastical characters on each panel.
Hardware:
Fully original and contemporaneous wrought iron: 4 shaped metal hinges fixed with era rivets and a front lever clasp perfectly functioning to ensure closure as a casket.
Condition:
Authentic original state, not restored and free of overpaint. Presents a magnificent patina of time with dense and natural crazing of the pictorial layer on the gypsum ground.
