Bohemian glassmasters, in what is now the Czech Republic, produced these precious hand-colored glass objects during the nineteenth century. They were created to commemorate important events and to showcase the extraordinary technical skill of the local craft workshops. The glass was made by layering a layer of colored glass over a transparent layer, then hand-cut and decorated with delicate gold motifs.

These elegant vessels were intended for the homes of high society and European nobility as decorative display pieces. They were placed on the shelves of drawing rooms and in the display cases of manor houses to demonstrate the owners' refined taste. Over time, with changing decorative styles, the artisanal production of these complex pieces gradually declined until it ceased.
