This antique mahogany dining table dates from around 1870–1890 and features four carved figures reading books.
Description from the seller
Exceedingly exclusive and monumental antique dining table from the late 19th century (ca. 1870-1890). This table is crafted as a single solid piece and, with its impressive architectural form, serves as an absolute showpiece in any high-end classical, country, or eclectic interior.
Unique Carving & Special Iconography
What makes this table truly unique and museum-worthy is the fabulously detailed, hand-carved underside support. The heavy central column rests on four monumental, ornately worked feet. Each foot is meticulously sculpted in the form of a seated person (four figures in total around the base) completely absorbed in reading an open book. This deeply thoughtful, intellectual motif beautifully departs from the era’s common hunting scenes or lion heads. It endows the furniture piece with a rare artistic value that is highly sought after by collectors.
Wood Type and Quality
The table is expertly crafted from high-quality hardwood (walnut / mahogany) with a stunning, deep patina and a warm, vibrant grain structure. The solid wooden top features an elegant profiled, robust edge that accentuates the table’s flowing shape. Because the table is one fixed piece, the top displays a seamless pattern without distracting joints.
Condition
The table is in excellent, solid antique condition. The construction remains extremely stable and powerful due to the absence of an extension mechanism. The wood shows characteristic light signs of aging and use that are entirely appropriate for its age and contribute to its unique historical character.
