This antique set of nested weights from Nuremberg, Germany, is made of cast brass and dates from 1850 to 1900.
Description from the seller
Nest of weights (also known as cup weights).
This set consists of an outer brass container shaped like a small pail with a hinged lid, a top handle, and a locking hook. Inside it holds a series of graduated frustum weights that fit perfectly into one another (stack).
This type of precision instrument was widely used from the 16th to the 19th century by pharmacists, merchants, goldsmiths, and money changers to weigh coins, precious metals, or spices/medicines with accuracy. The city of Nuremberg, in Germany, was the main center of production and export of these sets throughout Europe.
This specimen generally dates from the late 18th century to the 19th century (between 1700 and 1800), a period in which the production of these sets in Nuremberg and other European areas was standardized but still handcrafted through sand casting.
