This statue comes from northern Nigeria, Sokoto style; it is an archaeological excavation object. Sokoto is the nearest city to the site where these works were discovered. They were produced over a period from 500 BCE to 500 CE, i.e. about 1,000 years... Around the same period, closely styled works were created near Nok as well as near Katsina. The Nok, Sokoto, and Katsina styles are the three best known.
A superb representation of a male figure seated. The expression of the figure is quite peaceful; the posture and the body’s bearing add to this feeling of serenity. The handling of volumes with a simple and naïve appearance is well mastered. The arm and left leg are missing. The rest is in good condition, the penis has been restored. The work is solid, with no cracks or friable parts. Custom-made solid wood base. See photos for more details. The photos are part of the description. A beautiful old, rare and authentic piece. Sold with its original thermoluminescence test, QED Laboratory, as well as an authenticity certificate and a professional invoice.
Provenance:
- Private collection, Paris.
- M. Gondebeaud, Toulouse.
A sturdy and padded packaging is planned.
