Description from the seller
Exceptional pair of three-light candelabra in gilt-bronze ormolu, made during the 19th century according to Louis XVI style models, one of the most refined and elegant decorative languages of the French repertoire. These pieces reflect the historicist revival of neoclassical forms promoted during the 19th century, reproducing with great ornamental quality designs inspired by the Louis XVI era.
Each candelabrum rises on an imposing square-based architectural base, richly decorated with garlands, scrolls, pearls, acanthus leaves and finely chiselled classic motifs. The composition rests on delicate volute feet that provide visual lightness to the ensemble, while the vegetal and ornamental Reliefs reveal the mastery of casting and finishing work.
From the central body emerges an elegant symmetric structure of three candle-bearing arms. The arms, profusely decorated with vegetal motifs and beaded profiles, describe harmonious curves that evoke the lightness and balance characteristic of French Neoclassicism. The bobèches and candle cups feature rich relief decorations with floral friezes and elements inspired by classical Antiquity.
The central column, with turned forms and balanced proportions, culminates in an elaborate pierced finial crowned by a fleur-de-lis, a recurring symbol within the French ornamental repertoire and an element that adds verticality and distinction to the design. The sculptural richness of every detail is enhanced by mercury gilding or ormolu, a prestigious technique used in the finest decorative French bronzes of the 19th century, valued for the depth, warmth, and permanence of its finishes.
This elegant pair constitutes a magnificent example of historicist decorative bronze production, where the precision of chasing and the quality of gilding combine to recreate the refinement of French aristocratic interiors. Their monumental presence and extraordinary ornamental richness make them ideal pieces to accompany mantel clocks, adorn consoles, fireplaces, or period furniture, imparting a touch of luxury and sophistication characteristic of the great residences of the 19th century.
