About François Pompon
François Pompon (1855-1933) is one of the great figures of modern French animal sculpture.
After working with, among others, Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel, he gradually develops a very personal language, based on the refinement of volumes, the softness of curves, and the removal of superfluous details.
From the early 20th century, Pompon mainly dedicates himself to animal representation. He observes animals at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and seeks less to reproduce their anatomy in every detail than to capture movement, silhouette, and essence.
His consecration comes at the Salon d’Automne of 1922, where his monumental White Bear meets with enormous success. This work has become one of the most emblematic animal sculptures of the 20th century and one of the masterpieces of the Musée d’Orsay collections.
With its smooth surfaces and its powerful, simplified forms, Pompon’s work occupies a special place in the history of modern sculpture, between Rodin’s tradition and the more radical explorations of Brancusi.
