Description from the seller

Rare 4-Piece Antique Anatomical Model of the Human Brain – Plaster – Bock-Steger (Leipzig) – c. 1880-1920

Historic medical-didactic plaster model on original base with inventory label.

Offered for auction: A beautiful and highly rare antique medical-didactic model of the human brain (Encephalon), dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. This type of high-quality plaster model was manufactured by the renowned makers Bock-Steger in Leipzig (Germany) for use in university lectures and medical faculties.
This model stands out due to its exceptional completeness. It is fully dismantleable and consists of all 4 original parts:

1. Left cerebral hemisphere (cerebrum)
2. Right cerebral hemisphere
3. Cerebellum featuring a beautifully finely painted arbor vitae (tree of life)
4. Brainstem showing the internal cerebral ventricles
Internal Details & Authenticity:
The interior of the parts showcases the superior quality of this object. The various anatomical zones feature hand-painted didactic numbers (such as the number '9' on the corpus callosum), which corresponded to a medical lexicon at the time. The sections fit together seamlessly via the original, fully intact brass connecting pins.
The brain rests in a bowl-shaped, black-painted base that symbolically represents the interior of the skull. The front features an authentic paper inventory label reading "MD.-1954-N." and "Encefal...", beautifully emphasizing the academic provenance and history of this specific piece.

Condition:
Given the extreme fragility of antique plaster, this model is in very nice, aged condition with a beautiful patina. There are inevitable, characteristic signs of age, such as light paint wear, superficial crazing, and minor chips along the edges and connection joints (see photos). The anatomical structures and gyri remain highly visible. The paint is entirely original and has not been overpainted.
A prime piece for collectors of medical antiques (medicalia), cabinets of curiosities, or as a unique historical display piece.
The object will be very carefully packed using double-layered protection and shipped worldwide with insurance and Track & Trace.
