This pair of French Art Nouveau wall sconces is made of wrought iron and dates from the first half of the 20th century.
Description from the seller
Pair of wall-mounted sconces in a modernist style, crafted in wrought iron during the first half of the twentieth century, pieces of marked artisanal personality that evoke the organic and decorative aesthetics characteristic of the Modernist movement. Their design combines architectural lines inspired by Gothic with delicate curved details, yielding a balanced composition between structural solidity and ornamental lightness.
Each sconce features a cut-profile backing crowned by a succession of lobed shapes that provide visual rhythm and an elegant verticality. The central portion adopts a configuration similar to a small stylized ogival window, while the lower arms extend through hand-forged scrolls that reveal the Modernist taste for sinuous lines inspired by nature and the artisanal tradition of wrought iron.
Originally conceived to hold candles, these sconces also allow electrical adaptation, a common feature in many historic luminaires that survived the transition from combustion to electric lighting. Its construction in iron, with an attractive dark patina acquired over decades, enhances its authenticity and highlights the quality of the forge work.
The simplicity of their forms, combined with the expressive strength of the cut profiles and the curvilinear elements, makes them especially versatile pieces for interiors inspired by Modernist, rustic, Neo-Gothic, or Mediterranean aesthetics. Installed as a pair, they provide symmetry, warmth, and an unmistakable historic atmosphere, constituting an attractive example of early 20th-century decorative lighting craftsmanship.
