This French mid-century modern ceiling or wall light from circa 1960–1970 features a gilded brass grid with faceted glass inserts and measures 21 × 21 × 10 cm.
Description from the seller
This refined cylindrical lantern, dated mid-20th century (circa 1960–1970), represents the pinnacle of high-end Mid-Century Modern decorative lighting, belonging to the prestigious Hollywood Regency movement.
The piece is structured around a flawless tubular body, composed of a strict lattice grid in polished gold brass. Each module of this grille frames octagonal, diamond-cut crystals, which function as a dense, gleaming diffusing wall designed to refract light in a three-dimensional, theatrical way.
The top of the chandelier displays classic refinement, crowned by elegant ornamental armatures in free S-shaped volutes that transition to the suspension chain.
In the art and antiques market, the sophisticated geometric design and the crystal mounting technique point to two important possible authorship attributions.
The conceptual idea of the crystal lattice closely resembles the famous works of Austrian designer Emile Stejnar for Bakalowits & Söhne.
However, the inclusion of more classical ornamental details at the top also suggests a likely attribution to the prestigious German workshop Palwa (Palme & Walter), widely recognized for its luxurious cut-brass structures and exceptional-quality integrated crystals.
Due to the complexity of its execution, this lantern shows a high rarity on the current market. It is regarded as a piece of high commercial and aesthetic value, establishing itself as a highly sought-after and valued lot in international decorative arts auctions by investors, collectors, and luxury interior designers.
Note some signs of aging on the varnish and oxidation on the metal may not be visible when placed; please see the photos.
It will be packed with great care and shipped with tracking. The tracking will be updated on your Catawiki purchase page, please check regularly to avoid the package being returned to me, in which case the buyer will be responsible for the cost of any additional shipping.
