Execution knife – Ngulu Ngombe/Executioner’s sword
Rare antique and large Ngulu Ngombe execution knife/sword, with a wavy blade and many engraved marks and decorations in various forms—see photos. The base of the blade has a broad copper-wire wrap; the wooden handle is carved in stepped sections. Overall length approx. 74 cm, width approx. 19 cm, depth approx. 8 cm. Used and in good condition, with age-related wear and signs of use—see photos, which form part of the auction listing. Some tarnish; uncleaned, only oiled. The blade is forged from iron and very finely worked. Country of origin: DR Congo. Date: second half of the 19th century.
It was used as an execution knife for human sacrifices until the 20th century, and thereafter mainly by dignitaries and chiefs.
