Description from the seller
Pair of porcelain tea caddies with lids in the Meissen/Dresden style – 19th century (Paris / Edmé Samson?)
Description
A particularly beautiful and decorative pair of rectangular porcelain tea caddies (boîtes à thé) with matching lids, made in the second half of the 19th century after 18th-century models.
The tea caddies are shaped like flasks, with rounded corners and domed shoulders. Both sides feature refined, hand-painted decoration:
Front: A romantic fête galante scene depicting a couple in love in a landscape (inspired by Jean-Antoine Watteau and François Boucher).
Sides and back: Richly painted with multicoloured floral bouquets and scattered blossoms.
Gilt decoration: The scenes and corners are framed by elaborate rocaille cartouches with gilded shellwork and scrolling foliage.
The underside bears the well-known blue underglaze monogram with interlaced L’s, the year letter ‘A’ and the painter’s mark ‘c’ – a faithful 19th-century interpretation of the early Sèvres/Vincennes mark from 1753.
Specifications
Type: Tea caddies / small tea canisters with lids (pair)
Material: Hand-painted porcelain, enamel and gold
Origin: France (Paris, attributed to Edmé Samson or a contemporary)
Period: 19th century (circa 1870–1900)
Height: Approx. 11.5 cm (including lid)
Marks: Imitation Sèvres/Vincennes monogram in blue on the underside of both pieces
Condition report
The tea caddies have been carefully inspected and are in good overall condition, with the following notes:
Bodies / tea caddies: Both are intact; no breaks, cracks or restorations. Very light, age-appropriate wear to the gilding (including along the neck rims).
Lid 1: Intact.
Lid 2 (damage): The hand-modelled rose finial on top of the lid is damaged; the upper petals are broken off/missing (clearly visible in photos IMG_9585 and IMG_9586). A fine hairline crack is also visible in the porcelain on the inside of this same lid (see photo IMG_9584).
Please examine the photos carefully for a complete and accurate impression of the condition; they form an integral part of the description.
