Statue - Mangbetu - DR Congo

Very beautiful Mangbetu ancestor statue (northern Congo) with a dark polished patina. The motifs on the body correspond to tribal tattoos practiced by the Mangbetu, and the pulled headdress was fashionable within the ethnic group. The Mangbetu are also known for their practice of elongating the skull for aesthetic purposes from birth.
