Description from the seller
Lucien Gaillard - Art Nouveau First-Standard Silver (950) Covered Box / Bonbonnière, Paris, c. 1900
An exceptional and rare French Art Nouveau solid 1st-Standard silver covered trinket box / bonbonnière created by the master silversmith and jeweler Lucien Gaillard (1861–1942).
This circular box perfectly illustrates Gaillard's profound obsession with Japonisme and his mastery of traditional Japanese metalworking aesthetics. The entire exterior features a meticulously hand-crafted tsuchimeji (mallet-hammered) technique that resolves into a spectacular geometric honeycomb pattern. This tactile surface creates a sophisticated play of light and shade across the metal’s lustrous patina.
Both the rim of the lid and the interior lip of the base bear clear, authentic hallmarks:
1. The Maker’s Mark: A diamond lozenge punch containing the initials "L G" flanking a central emblem, belonging to the Paris workshop of Lucien Gaillard.
2. The Purity Mark: The French Minerva 1st Standard head within an octagonal border, certifying a premium composition of 950/1000 pure silver (exceeding standard 925 sterling).
Pieces of holloware from Gaillard's highly specialized Japonisme metal studio are exceptionally uncommon on the open art market, making this an exquisite acquisition for serious collectors of French Art Nouveau silverware.
