This excellent-condition Kenwood P-91 Computer-Controlled Linear Tracking turntable was manufactured in 1988 and is tested and working.
Description from the seller
Fully refurbished, tested and with a high quality elliptical stylus.
The Kenwood P-91 is a late-1980s (produced roughly around 1987–1989) computer-controlled linear tracking turntable system. Designed as a fully automatic component during the peak of midi/stack stereo systems, it offered high-tech convenience features meant to take the guesswork out of playing vinyl records.
Key Features & Technical Specifications
• Linear Tracking System: Unlike traditional pivot tonearms that move in an arc, the P-91 features a tangential/linear tracking tonearm. It moves in a straight line across the record, mimicking the machine that originally cut the vinyl master, which eliminates inner-groove distortion.
• Fully Automatic Operation: The turntable handles everything at the push of a button—automatically cueing up, dropping the needle, and returning the arm when the record finishes.
• Track-Selection Function: Marketed as a "computer-controlled" system, it includes advanced automated features like programmable track-skipping, allowing users to select specific tracks similar to a CD player.
• Direct Drive Motor: It utilizes a direct drive mechanism rather than a belt, providing stable playback speeds and removing the need to ever replace a degraded rubber drive belt.
• Form Factor: Built in a sleek, slimline chassis typical of late-80s audio architecture, it includes integrated front-facing control buttons so you can control playback without opening the dust cover.
Usage Context
In modern vinyl setups, the Kenwood P-91 serves as a highly functional, low-maintenance entry point or vintage curiosity. Because linear tracking turntables automate the tracking force and anti-skate calibrations, it is exceptionally easy to use for beginners who want a plug-and-play experience without manually balancing tonearms.
