Ger van Oers

Original medieval cannon ball from the defensive line of Sluis, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Weight 7.8 kg with a diameter of 12 cm. Condition: in good condition. The photos are part of the description.

The States-Spanish Lines are a system of military defence lines, established during the Eighty Years War (1568-1648) and the war of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) in the north of the County of Flanders. Between States-Flanders (the current Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) and the Spanish territory immediately beyond, the city of Antwerp and the north of the provinces of East and West-Flanders, a real front zone emerged. These lines consisted of fortified towns like Sluis, Aardenburg, Oostburg, Axel and Hulst ('States') or Oostende, Damme, Middelburg, Ghent, and Antwerp ('Spanish'). Along the access roads fortresses, ramparts, and redoubts were established, often connected with the cities or with each other by dikes. The network of defensive lines was sometimes based on old medieval dikes along the embankments of shipping channels or on dikes of canals or wide waterways.

From the 16th century warships were fitted with rows of cannons over much of their lengths, sometimes on multiple decks. The enemy was shot at while sailing past.
