A rotating star chart (25 x 25 cm), one ESA photo of the Hipparcos satellite (launched in 1989 with an Ariane rocket) and an informative leaflet are part of this special package. Hipparcos is the most accurate astrometric satellite ever launched. It measured the positions of 120,000 stars in our galaxy with an accuracy, corresponding to the angle at which a man on the Moon can be seen from the Earth! The satellite is named after the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, who made the first map of the stars.  Thanks to Hipparchus and his successors nowadays we use a rotating star chart, the tool to find constellations and stars in the sky on your own. The chart in this package was made by astronomer Rob Walrecht. The diameter is about 25 cm. The top disc can be rotated by hand and set to a date and time. The cropping then shows the starry sky with the constellations of that moment. The star disk (also known as Planisphere) is intended for the latitude of Netherlands and Belgium.
