Leo Setz

Kelderman was both a painter and a salesman. He lived in Amsterdam where he had a small studio where he made namely Amsterdam city views and see views.

Kelderman was an autodidact. He had a special painting talent in the impressionist style.

He started selling his paintings starting in 1948, mostly by visiting companies where he introduced himself in the following manner: "I'm Jan Kelderman, the famous painter. I would like to show you my work. The prices are stated on the back, but these refer to the first painting. Every following painting costs half.” Kelderman worked for more than 30 years. He also sold paintings on small fairs and markets, though also in the pub where he could be found regularly. He liked a drink. Jan was a cheerful and warm human being with an optimistic outlook on life.

His works are mostly city views or flower still lifes, every now and then mixed with ‘bomschuiten’ on sea, a path through the forest or a winter landscape. Paris was one of his favourite subjects.
