The Dogon civilization is located in central Mali, it is known for its mythology, masked rituals, sculptures and architecture. 

The composition of the sitting couple shows the different yet complementary roles of male and female partners as a unit of life. 

The figurine is characterized by the understated elegance, the details and harmonious unit. One of the most striking aspects is the double symmetry: the elongated bodies of the figures are depicted as a series of parallel vertical lines that are crossed by horizontals that draw them together. 

At the back of the back of the woman is a child, whereas this is a quiver at the back of the man. This symbolizes man and woman who support each other and hand over life to the next generation.
