Ghislain “Gies” Cosyns was born on 31 December 1920 in Kwaremont as the eighth child in a family of 12. Just like his father, he received his teachers diploma in 1939, and he became a teacher in Zulte. 

As a passionate lover of art and nature, he became a professional painter, initially in Nederbrakel where he had his studio. In 1951, however, he built a family home with thatched roof on the Kwaremont square, which would become known as the owl nest, by analogy with Streuvel’s snowbird nest. In the meantime, Gies had married Johanna Lerooij, from Ostend. They had six children: two boys and four girls. In 1995, he moved to Oudenaarde, where he died two years later on 8 February 1997. 

As an artist, Gies Cosyns was an ambassador of the Flemish Ardennes School, inspired by Valerius de Saedeleer and his son-in-law Leo Piron. That Flemish Ardennes style is characterized by the use of very transparent paint, which made it possible to create various thin layers and detailed realistic depictions of his beloved beautiful region.
