1st half 20th century - Good condition, used with some signs of wear

PROVENANCE: From a private Antwerp family by inheritance.
A fine Baule mask used during funerals to remember the ancestor, second half XXth century.

HEIGHT: 34 cm 49 cm on custom made metal stand ( included in your package ).

CONDITION: Shiny patina One chip missing on the back on the above part of the rim, abrasions around the eyes missing the original metal, ( see pictures)

Ivory Coast Baule portrait mask features namely eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth and eyes. In addition, the three lobbied coiffure, 3 scarification dots on forehead symbol of beauty. These masks where used during rites of passage into adulthood. The beard indicates that the person is an elder, someone who has created a family and deserves respect that comes with age and wisdom.

The Baule masks are most sought-after among West Africa masks. The ‘Mblo’ masks dances during the Gba gba ceremony by woman. It is a dance performed as entertainment on rest days or during mourning ceremonies .
