In 1982 Joseph Beuys performed the intervention entitled 7,000 Oaks (7,000 Eichen)  for the seventh edition of the contemporary art exhibition Documenta in Kassel (Germany). Beuys placed 7,000 blocks of basalt in front of the facade of the Fridericianum museum, where the biennial was held, and at one end of the accumulation of blocks planted an oak with his own hands. The proposal carried with it a requirement: the stones would only move if an oak was planted in its new location next to each of them, in the meantime they would remain in place. It took 5 years to carry out the "urban reforestation", the last one without Beuys, who died in 1986. For the location of the last tree the same one was chosen as the first one, in front of the museum.
This artistic intervention, of great controversy in its beginnings, and in which citizens, administrations and companies collaborated, supposed a great positive impact in the city due to its social and ecological character, changing the landscape of Kassel forever. Today the work is maintained by the city with the support of the foundation «7000 Eichen». It is part of the German national heritage since 2004.
