Ettore Sottsass

studies architecture at the Polytechnic of Turin and graduates in 1939. 
In 1957 he becomes art director of Poltronova, the Agliana company, called by entrepreneur Sergio Cammilli.

In 1958 he started his collaboration with Olivetti, in the field of computer design, alongside Marcello Nizzoli, which he will take place of after he retired [3]. This activity will last about 30 years and will lead to the emergence of a new style for office products from the company in Ivrea. Among the objects designed by Sottsass we can recall the calculators Elea 9003, Summa-19, Divisumma 26 and Logos 27 (1963), the typewriters Praxis 48 (1964) and Valentine (Perry King) and the Synthesis office system (1973). The most important project was the mainframe computer Elea 9003 (1959), which won the Compasso D'Oro in 1959 [4].
In 1972 he exhibited at the exhibition curated by Emilio Ambasz, Italy: the new domestic landscape, at MoMA in New York. [5] Meanwhile, he holds a lecture tour around England and, in 1976, he receives an honorary degree at the Royal College of Art in London [6].
In 1979 he participated with the Alchimi group at the Design Forum in Linz, presenting the “Seggiolina da Pranzo”, the “Svincolo” floor lamp, and the table “Le strutture tremano”. In 1980 along with Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini and Marco Marabelli he founds studio Ettore Sottsass Associati [7].
In 1981 he founded the Memphis group, with Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki, Andrea Branzi, Michele de Lucchi and other architects of international standing.
Many personal exhibitions have been dedicated to him: we remember the great exhibitions, in 1976, at the Cooper Hewitt in New York and International Design Zentrum in Berlin, at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1994 and in 2003, the Design Gallery Milano in 1988, 1993 and 1995 , the Centre for contemporary art Luigi Pecci in Prato in 1999, the Suntory Museum in Osaka in 2000, the Museum of decorative arts in Cologne in 2004 and the MART in Rovereto in 2005, edited by Milco Carboni. His works are also in the collections of prominent museums such as the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Montréal, the Israel Museum of Jerusalem and the National Museum in Stockholm.
