Oil on canvas, signed bottom right

Size with frame: 715 x 56 cm
Gioacchino la Pira, an artist active in Naples between 1839 and 1870, is known for his landscape paintings of Naples and its surroundings. The lot offered here depicts one of the many eruptions of the Vesuvius in the nineteenth century, a theme that was always dear to him and repeatedly chosen. He came to success with “L’eruzione del 1839” which is also his first documented work. The lot offered here, particularly pleasant and of great quality, is notable for its chromatic vivacity and for the freshness of execution. Moreover, the compositional scheme here is also updated around the new examples proposed by Gigante and by the Dutch Pitloo, therefore more loose and less harnessed on the old eighteenth-century schemes.
