Hobbe Smith (1862-1942) - Panoramisch stadsgezicht
Beautiful painting by the Dutch painter Hobbe Smith (Witmarsum, 1862 - Amsterdam, 1942). Bought at auction house Dickhaut, Maastricht.
Hobbe Smith apprenticed at a young age with a lithographer. In his spare time, he took drawing lessons. Thanks to a wealthy patron who recognized his special talent and a royal scholarship, he was able to study at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Subsequently he studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp.
The style of Smith is characterized by a free and impressionistic touch, with feel for atmosphere. Smith painted a wide range of subjects including many cityscapes. He admired the work of Jacob Maris, but his own work is brighter and lighter. In 1888 he won the Willink van Collenprijs. It was not until 1920 that he received greater fame after an exhibition in the Pulchri Studio in The Hague. In 1917 he was awarded a gold medal by Queen Wilhelmina.
Work by Smith is among others featured in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe int Enschede, the Drents Museum in Assen and in the Fries Scheepvaart Museum in Sneek. His paintings also appear regularly during art and antique auctions.
Technique: Oil on a thick oak panel.
In a beautiful Baroque frame (this is not part of the sale but will be included for free).
