John Cleese's enormously comical influence has spread over generations. His sharp, unapologetic eye and the unique type of physical comedy that he perfectioned with Monty Python, in Fawlty Towers and more, now seem to have become part of the DNA of comedy. In this rolling memo So, Anyway ... Cleese takes his readers on a Grand Tour of his rise in the world of entertainment, from his youth in a sleepy English town and his early comical days at Cambridge University (with future Python-partner Graham Chapman), until the start of the historical comedy group that would launch him to worldwide fame.

Cleese had only left Cambridge a few days before and had started a career in law when he was approached by two BBC executives who offered him a comedy job on radio. That fateful moment and the almost simultaneous offer to bring his university humour to the famous West End pushed him on a different career path. He cut his teeth writing for stars such as David Frost and Peter Sellers, and ultimately joined the other five Pythons as a pioneer in a newly invented type of comedy, madness and absurdity. On his way, he found his first true love in actress Connie Booth and transformed himself from a somewhat reluctant performer to a world class actor and back.
