The PM 6003 is based on the PM 6002 and delivers 2X 45 Watts (RMS) to 8 Ohms (60 Watts to 4 Ohms) and is fed from a shielded ring core transformer. A very affordable amplifier with such a transformer is already remarkable, but Marantz has gone even further for the third incarnation of their 6000 amplifier; more high-quality power elcos have been deployed and decisive final transistors, so that the PM6003 can deliver an even bigger punch than its predecessors. These new transistors are attached to a heavier extruded aluminium heat sink, which is less resonant. There are six inputs, two line exits and something that is a rarity nowadays: an internal Phonotrap. On the back we find eight gold-plated speaker connections (speaker A & B) which, despite new full-metal knobs such as cable clamps, are not excellent but are equipped with well-usable 4 mm (banana) buses. The cinch buses are gold-plated at the PM6003, unlike the PM5003 (for sound it doesn't matter much, as long as the canisters remain clean and corrosion-free; a layer of gold can help). We find a Loudness button between the keys. A Mono feature would have been more useful for many music lovers. The tone control and balance controller work nicely but the Source Direct function allows most controls to be bypassed and this is gratefully used during the listening sessions. The PM 6003 has inherited the patented ‘Current Feedback’ circuit of the more expensive Marantz amplifier models and is fortunately equipped with the (ungrounded) IEC mains connection so a better or longer power cord can easily be connected. The two 6003 models have a front panel which consists of both aluminium and fiberglass reinforced plastic. The blue LEDs were very bad; they light up modestly (the black fronts of the review copies also helped because silver accentuates the brilliance of modern LEDs). In addition, the 6003 player and amplifier have the same dimensions, namely: 10.4 by 44 by 36.9 centimetres (H X W X D).
