Leo Setz

Jan Voerman was born in Kampen. Studied at the national academy in Amsterdam and from 1881-1883 at the royal academy of fine arts in Antwerp. He took lessons with Verlat from 1880-1881. Voerman specialised in painting landscapes, genre pieces, flower still lives and cityscapes. He was a member of the artists' association 'Arti et Amicitiae'. 
In 1885, Voerman moved into Jozef Israels' former studio, Rozengracht 66 in Amsterdam and came into contact with artists such as Eduard Karsen, Isaac Israels and Breitner; he makes many watercolours of flowers and meadow landscapes with cattle with in an impressionistic style. He painted near Kampen. In the years 1887/88, he spent the summer months in Hattem.
He earned the Willink of Collen prize with 'Vee in de weide'.  In 1889, Jan Voerman became a member of the Hollandsche Teeken-Maatschappij. 
Voerman married Anna Verkade, daughter of E. Verkade - founder of the company Verkade in Zaandam. He moved to Hattem, where they lived with their first son Jan Voerman Jr. (1890-1976), the later painter and best known as illustrator of many Verkade-images. In 1894, the art dealer F. Buffa organised a solo exhibition of Jan Voerman's work in the showroom of Arti et Amicitiae. Shortly thereafter Voerman was invited to participate in the very first Biennale; 
Since 1896, he has lived in Hattem. Since that time, Voerman has been painting his many IJssel sceneries. His work is now described as 'the classical apotheosis of Impressionism'.  In 1898, there was an exhibition in honour of the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina. 
Around 1904, Voerman painted only with oil paint for some time.  He wanted to achieve the same transparency as in his watercolours. 
His eyes are getting worse; from 1935 onwards, he was no longer able to paint. He died in Hattem in 1941. 
About his series of watercolours of a 'Gemberpot met bloemen', Tessalo once remarked that one: 'could not see what was behind' [with the eyes]; he thought they were too flat. Voerman then informed him that he did not need to see what was behind.
Jan Veth recognised the changing character of the painter, he wrote around 1892-94: 'Throughout almost all of Voerman's work there is a hesitancy between softness and strength, between the sensitive of his easy-going and the factual... The painter of those flowers in vases and of flowers in vases, of those tight meadows and of those tight meadows is first of all an outdoorsman and an observer and the work of such an individual is not born from an idea but from a striking emotion.' 
The work of Jan Voerman Sr. can be seen in various museums including in Kampen and in the Voerman museum in Hattem.
