A rare, beautiful and interesting set of authentic Javanese wooden polychromed sculptures 
The heads and arms were carved separately. The earrings of the male figure are also made separately and secured to the earlobes with copper wire. The man also has a loose staff in his right hand. The female figure, standing in a subtle dance pose, has loosely applied hair, probably human hair. Both wear a caste cord indicating the distinguished provenance (princely?) of the couple.
Of these sculptures, if they can be found, exist almost only small copies. This large size (male figure max 67 cm) and made in this quality is downright exceptional!
Bruce Carpenter tells Mark Johnson (both top South-East Asia experts): 
 They are typical of models illustrating the native lifestyles that were made for colonial museums, fairs, etc. They also seem to have been given as gifts and are at the least precursors of models. 

Once bought at a local auction and since privately owned.

Here and there the statues show minor damage, the female figure has some missing fingers and there may be paint retouches. This is inherent to their age. The photos show all the defects and are part of the description. The couple looks very distinguished,  an asset in any interior and forms a beautiful image of bygone times of Java.
