Universal 5000 is an open reel, two-stage mono tape recorder, introduced in 1963 by UHER in Munich.
It was used by law enforcement agencies to record interrogations and wiretapped calls partly because of the extremely low tape speed of 2.9 cm/s.
The device is housed in a strong gray housing made of cast aluminum. All controls are located on the recessed control panel on the front, while all connections (except the power cord) are located on the right side of the device.
 The device is used with 6" reels and records a single channel (mono) on half of a 2-track tape at one of the three speeds: 2.9, 4.7 or 9.5 cm/s. At the highest tape speed of 9.5 cm/s, the frequency range is 40 Hz to 16,000 Hz.
The aluminium housing has light signs of age.
