Oil painting on canvas (stretcher / canvas size 40 cm x 50 cm) painted with gold, patinated wooden frame by the Belgian artist Jef De Coninck (1921-1999). The work is in good condition, I inherited it from my parents who received it as a gift from a friend-priest in 1974 for their tenth wedding anniversary. I discovered this through the envelope containing a card with the wishes that were still stuck in the back of the stretcher frame with the text: 

"If you have to go to Emmaus tomorrow and along the way there will be questions in your heart and doubts in your mind - behold - who will go with you.  His voice will be warm and full of understanding, his hand soft and firm.
And when you invite him to come in - behold - if he breaks bread with you, it can make sense to the Lord, very clearly, and then just the man who goes the way with you!"

The card is included in the lot, it is part of the story of the painting.

This is a rare work in the sense that Jef de Coninck mainly painted daily scenes, portraits, landscapes etc. and practically no religiously inspired works.  only a few are known.  The painter worked a lot on commission, because he himself was not really religiously installed.  It is all the more surprising that he can capture a biblical scene in such a way that it almost speaks.

We sell it because otherwise it will spend its life in the attic, we prefer that someone who likes it can enjoy it.
