Adams C1178, Gamba 1308

A cornerstone of sixteenth-century political thought that found one of its most fruitful expressions among the opponents of the absolutism of the Medici.

A treatise on political theory that sets out the liberal, if not democratic, principles for a republican city government, with much attention devoted to public administration, economic policy, the progress of agricultural production, etc. Cavalcanti (1503-62), a Florentine scholar, historian and diplomat, is best known for his compendium of classical rhetoric (Retorica, 1559).
After the assassination of Alessandro de' Medici in 1537, he left Florence and lived in Ferrara and Rome, serving as a diplomat for Pope Paul III, and died in Padua. This treatise was published posthumously by Sebastiano Erizo and reprinted several times, with at least three editions in the nineteenth century.

In this perspective, the intellectual and political events of Cavalcanti constitute a privileged point of view to analyse the influence that Machiavelli exercised on the main Italian Lordships already in the early sixteenth century and which finds in this work one of the most convincing expressions.

FIRST EDITION of this famous treatise on the best way to govern, which includes Erizzo's treatise on civil government, also published here for the first time. Bartolomeo Cavalcanti (1503–1562) was a Florentine nobleman, writer and political opponent of the Medici. Sebastiano Erizzo (1525–1585) was an Italian humanist and numismatist.
