Le Nieuport 17 était l'un des grands chasseurs de la Première Guerre mondiale. Arrivant sur les lignes françaises en mars 1916, l'appareil a été adopté par le Royal Flying Corps et le Royal Naval Air Service, car il était supérieur à n'importe quel appareil de conception britannique en service à l'époque. Le Nieuport 17 a également servi dans les forces aériennes de Hollande, de Belgique, de Russie et d'Italie. L'Italie en a construit 150 sous licence et l'Allemagne, impressionnée, a demandé à des fabricants d'utiliser certaines de ses caractéristiques. Six escadrilles du RFC et huit du RNAS ont été équipées de Nieuport 17.

Malgré le fait que son aile inférieure pouvait s'arracher lors de piqué à grande vitesse, le Nieuport devint l'un des favoris des meilleurs as aériens alliés. L'as canadien, W.A. « Billy » Bishop, reçut la Croix de Victoria alors qu'il pilotait un Nieuport 17.
