Ontwikkeling 1

is a lithograph print by the Dutch artist 
M. C. Escher

In de ruim vierhonderd prenten van M.C. Escher is het reptiel, naast de vogel en de vis, een dier dat vaker in zijn werk voorkomt. Nadat Escher in mei 1937 zijn eerste vlakvulling in het werk Metamorphose I maakt, volgt in oktober van dat jaar Ontwikkeling I. Het is een intrigerende prent waarin een aantal dingen gebeuren..

Wie de houtsnede Ontwikkeling  voor het eerst ziet, begint door het heldere zwart en wit van de vier salamanders automatisch in het midden van de prent te kijken. Vervolgens neemt men het hele vlak waar en ziet dat de vormen naar de buitenkant toe steeds vager worden.
