Eerste alinea van een handgeschreven brief van Gerard Reve aan zijn Engelse vriend Perkin Walker, gedateerd 25th Augustus, 1980, op eigen briefpapier "Gerard Reve 'La Grâce', Le Poët Laval 26160 La Bégude de Mazenc, France". In inkt, met een klein inktvlekje. Met op de achterzijde: "Deze inkt is beter".

Reve vertelt Walker dat hij 1 september met de dagboot naar Engeland komt: "The owners have promised me vacant possession per September 1rst. I intend to cross on that date, Monday, on the day boat and stay the night in Dovercourt or Harwich. Perhaps I can sign the Deeds the next day." 

Reve kocht het huis 'Sea View', aan de Main Road 579 in Harwich om in de wintermaanden rustig te kunnen werken. Hij wilde in Engeland niet langer bij Perkin Walker logeren: "[...] het is beslist een Britse hartstocht om zoveel mogelijk ongerief te lijden [...]" (Nop Maas. Gerard Reve deel 3, p. 222).
